The best reason to undertake performance assurnace for large systems is that it will save you money and reduce risk. If performance assurnace is not undertaken the final performance of the system will not be known until the end of the project, either during performance testing or, worse, when the customer begins using the system. This means that expensive performance fixes have to be added at the most time-critical stage of the project.
